Hotels with Condos Allowed in Resort

by Sarah Tully

The Orange County Register - Wednesday, August 23, 2006

Developers can build hotels incorporating luxury condos on two plots in the Anaheim Resort under a plan approved Tuesday.

But the City Council plans to later consider allowing regular homes on one of the spots, where mobile homes now sit.

The 4-1 vote came after a two-hour discussion on whether affordable housing should trump hotel towers. Mayor Curt Pringle dissented, saying homes are inconsistent with the resort plan and could compete with the Platinum Triangle.

SunCal hopes to build 1,500 homes, including 200 affordable housing units, on the site. The developer has yet to submit a formal proposal.

Coucil members questioned a city-commissioned report that first found residences would be appropriate in the resort, but the recommendation was deleted in a later draft. Councilman Harry Sidhu called for a report on the inconsistencies.
